A typical Manhattan is made with sweet vermouth, but the Perfect Manhattan gives the traditional recipe a twist. For this version, use half dry vermouth; to modernize even further, serve it on a large ice cube in a double rocks glass.
The result? A spirit-forward drink that’s less sweet and more refreshing—perfect for the transition from summer to fall.
2 oz bourbon or rye
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz dry vermouth
1 brandy-soaked cherry
Dash orange bitters
Combine the cherry and bitters in the glass; add the large ice cube. Combine the bourbon or rye with both vermouths and a few standard-size ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Stir, don’t shake, to cool the blend. Strain into the glass—and enjoy!
