Now that we are in the heart of the winter season, I’m reminded of how vital it is to nourish ourselves well. In this issue we celebrate the people and practices that connect our lifestyle to health, food, and drink in ways that are both nourishing and inspiring.

A wholesome diet often starts with grains—kernels of sustenance that have nourished humanity for millennia. We share some history and perspective on how, as time passes, the infrastructure built to sustain agricultural practices in Gallatin Valley inevitably will change.

Grains can be utilized differently from the ultra-processed foods that lead to poor health outcomes. We hope you’ll be inspired to learn about baked goods made by local hands and how winter athletes use food for fuel, as well as explore recipes you can make at home that utilize grains to bring both vitality and flavor to our tables.

You’ll read about health professionals who are encouraging our community to use food as medicine and to incorporate other lifestyle habits to allow our communities’ inhabitants to live their best lives.

We’re also thrilled to highlight the rising generation of young people working tirelessly in fields and kitchens. Their enthusiasm and hard work shape the future of food in Montana.

When it comes to beverages, the season calls for something to warm the soul. We shine a spotlight on local coffee purveyors and their commitment to sourcing ethically while improving taste for your morning coffee. We also celebrate the distillers in our region who are crafting spirits that embody tradition and artistry. Their carefully distilled creations, from small-batch whiskeys to herbaceous liqueurs, are perfect companions for winter evenings. These makers remind us that beverages can reflect a commitment to quality and health-conscious craftsmanship.

Throughout this issue, in all these stories, we see a shared commitment to the idea that health is not a trend, but a way of life. Whether a warm slice of bread just out of the oven, a sip of locally distilled spirits, or a dish of thoughtfully prepared food, every bite and sip offers an opportunity to nurture ourselves and our community.

Let’s celebrate the people and practices making it all possible. Together, we can build a future where health thrives—on every plate, in every glass, and in every life.
